Introduction to the Institute of High Energy Physics (IHEP)

The Institute of High Energy Physics (IHEP) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) invites applications for permanent staff positions at all levels. IHEP is a comprehensive research laboratory for particle and astroparticle physics, accelerator physics and technology, radiation technologies and applications, as well as for nuclear analytical techniques and interdisciplinary research.

 

Working at IHEP are over 1,500 full-time staff, as well as over 900 postdocs and graduate students. Particle physics is a very collaborative and very international field, and we have partnerships and experimental collaborations with dozens of universities and research institutions across China and the world.

I.    Preferred Research Directions

     ·   Particle physics and nuclear physics

     ·   Computer science

 

II. Positions and Requirements

Position #1: Academic Leader

Requirements:

     a)  Possess broad international influence in one’s academic field and grasp key technologies; be able to solve key technological problems; be an academic and technical leader; possess S&T leadership ability and organizational ability;

     b)  Should not be over 50 years old as of Jan. 1 of the application year; in special circumstances, this requirement may be relaxed;

     c)  Ph.D. degree; experience as a full professor or in an equivalent position at a well-known overseas university, research institute, or research arm of a large corporation; exceptional candidates overseas with experience as an associate professor or in an equivalent position may also apply.

Modes of support:

     a)  Will be hired as a researcher and Ph.D. supervisor;

     b)  Start-up research funds of RMB 6–16 million;

     c)  Living allowance of RMB 2 million;

     d)  Special circumstances will be handled on a case by case basis.


Position #2: Outstanding Young Overseas Talent

Requirements:

     a)  Position will be funded by the National Natural Science Foundation’s Outstanding Young Scientist Fund (Overseas); applicant should not be over 40 years old as of Jan. 1 of the application year;

     b)  Ph.D.; in general, applicant should have at least three years of continuous experience in a formal teaching position or research position at an overseas university, research institute, or corporate research entity; for individuals with a Ph.D. from an overseas university and outstanding achievements, the above requirement about length of work experience is negotiable;

     c)  Research or technological achievements recognized within the field; potential for being an academic leader or outstanding talent in the field;

     d)  Candidate should not yet have returned to work full-time in China, or, if so, only after Jan. 1, 2023; upon receiving notification of funding, grantee must resign overseas employment or have no work overseas and must work full-time for not less than three years. 

Modes of support:

     a)  Individual will be hired as a researcher or assistant researcher; specially qualified candidates may be hired as a “distinguished young researcher” and Ph.D. advisor;

     b)  Start-up research funds of RMB 3–9 million (including national funding);

     c)  Allowance for living expenses of RMB 1 million;

     d)  Special circumstances will be handled on a case by case basis.


Position #3: CAS Talent Program (Young Researcher)

Requirements:

     a)  Should possess excellent potential for scientific and technological innovation; have the ability to work independently as well as good teamwork skills;

     b)  Should not be over 40 years old as of Jan. 1 of the application year;

     c)  For overseas candidates: Not less than three years of continuous postdoctoral work experience at a well-known overseas university or research institute; this requirement is negotiable for outstanding candidates;

     d)  For domestic candidates: Not less than three years of continuous postdoctoral research experience or experience as an associate professor (or in a comparable position).

Modes of support:

     a)  Individual will be hired as a researcher or associate researcher; specially qualified candidates may be hired as IHEP “distinguished young researcher” and Ph.D. supervisor;

     b)  Start-up research funds of RMB 1–8 million (including national funding);

     c)  After CAS assessment, allowance for living expenses of RMB 1 million.


Position #4: IHEP Talent Program

Requirements:

     a)  Ph.D.; five or more years of scientific research experience including during Ph.D. program;

     b)  For overseas candidates: Postdoc or assistant professor experience; should not be over 40 years old as of Jan. 1 of the application year; for candidates with associate professor or comparable experience, should not be more than 45 years old;

     c)  For domestic candidates: Should possess assistant researcher or associate professor (or comparable level) experience; should not be more than 40 years old; for those with researcher or full professor experience, should not be more than 45 years old;

     d)  Exceptions may be made for extremely well-qualified candidates in engineering technology.

Modes of support:

     a)  Individual will be hired as a researcher or associate researcher;

     b)  Start-up research funds of RMB 100,000.
